about

Hi there. My name is Katie, but in the writing world I go by Emmeline or Emme! I’m a medical student by day and amateur poet by night, just trying to bring some of my thoughts and experiences to life on a page. I started this blog in May 2022 after completing NaPoWriMo on my Medium blog, a platform which made me realize how much I preferred having my own site. The domain karanoias is inspired by The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows book by John Koenig, his original Tumblr site one that I loved back in my high school days. I recently rediscovered the project and the author while looking through old NaPoWriMo prompts, and found the definition for “karanoia” while flipping through his physical book. It perfectly describes how I feel about writing as a whole – exciting to create but daunting to start.

I plan to use this blog as my own personal poetry niche where I post all things related to the subject: my own poems, thoughts and commentary on the writing process, reviews on the latest collections or poets I’ve read, and whatever else strikes my fancy.

Poetry is not a new thing for me – I’ve been writing for a long time but only recently decided to be more active in seriously pursuing the hobby. I stopped writing my own poetry for a while during college when other courses took up more time, but now that I’ve graduated, there are no more excuses not to write. Writing is what helped me clear my mind and clarify my thoughts, so I want to get back into that kind of mindset and clarify my own voice. I think now is an especially crucial time because so much change happens during these years, and I want to document as much of it as I can. It might just be a pipe dream now, but I hope one day I can hold a copy of my own collection of poems in my hand. This is the start of that dream!

Thank you all so much for joining me on this journey! I’m glad to have you here in my little corner of the internet and hope you’ll find something to your liking. Cheers to poetry!
